Written Words

Here are a few things I've written. Once I get more organized I'll find a way to publish some of the short stories I've written.

Jump

I wrote this for a contest based on a prompt. ~~~

Seconds after jumping into the dark waters, realization slammed into my gut- I didn't want to die. I'd made a grave mistake. The frosty waters rushed me, filling my mouth, nose, ears, fighting to gain access to my lungs. Going down fast, my arms reached out like wings pushing me toward the surface.
I grasped the edge of the boat, one hand slipped but I manage to latch back on. Looking up, I catch sight of a shadowy figured looming above. How did he find me, how did he get on the boat? Did he know?

Monsters

Are you afraid of monsters?

I am.

There are monsters in my room. I take my blanket and pull it up until it covers my head and I can no longer see their shadows dance across the walls. Time slides by and I hold my breath, trying not to make any sounds, until my lungs feel as though they may burst open. When I finally need to drag in another breath, I do so with caution in case they hear. Fire burns my throat and I want to scream, but I can't, I won't do so. If they knew I was awake, bad things may happen.

They watch me when I sleep. They don't know I know this. I lay still under the safety of my blanket and wait...

They hover.

They creep around my room tiptoeing over toys. They whisper. They slither. They smell of sweat and something I can't name and the scent caresses the air.

They lie in wait until the morning light busts its way through the dirty blinds that hang slanted across my window.

The new born sunlight chases them away, although they leave their rotten smell as a reminder of the visit they bestowed upon me.
